Tour of my 4k rig.
Recently I’ve been shooting a lot of different projects from stock video, to events, corporate videos and interviews and some personal projects and I’ve had people ask me about my setup.
In this post, I’ll be giving you a tour of one of my common rig configurations.
Filming in Thailand
Recently I decided to take a trip to Thailand and Shanghai. Most of it was for scouting locations and also to build some footage for my reel. I knew I wanted to have high quality footage and wanted to be able to shoot in 4k as well as stills. Lastly I knew there would be times that I wouldn’t have access to power so having batteries and different power options would be very important. In this post I’ll be talking about what I brought, why I brought it, as well as what I didn’t bring. lastly Ill be talking about my challenges when filming in these locations.
What works and what doesn’t
The Sony a7s and Atomos Assassin are a great combo when shooting together. Though some might say the a7s ii is a better camera because of internal 4k I say yes and no. While its true the a7s ii can record 4k internally it does so in a more compressed lossy format. Theres just no way around that. Being a newer camera it is also priced more than the a7s. Because I wanted a high quality signal in 4k without having to buy an Black magic Ursa (which is heavy and media is still expensive!) I still stick by my decision of of picking up the assassin and a7s. Recently I was in Mexico and decided it was a great opportunity to test my equipment overseas and see how it performs as well as see if I could make a kit that was versitile and easy to work with.
Recently I just posted about the Atomos Assassin and some topics about it. However nothing beats seeing it in action. Because this video is pretty comprehensive in all the topics it covers, I’ve provided links to jump to that particular section of the video. So far having the assassin for 1 week has changed the way I shoot and quality of work I can create.
4k is here to stay
Technology is always improving and it wasn’t long ago the the leap to HD from SD was made. While HD may be here for a few years yet, inevitably more content will move into larger resolutions. The newest standard to become more adapted is 4K. As such more cameras and televisions are supporting 4k content creation and display. That where the Atomos Assassin comes in.
